Set on the slopes of Haleakala in the crisp, clean air of Olinda, this charming B&B is located on an 8-1/2 acre protea farm, surrounded by 35,000 acres of ranch lands (with miles of great hiking trails). The 5,000-square-foot country home, outfitted with a professional eye to detail, has large windows with incredible panoramic views of all of Maui. Upstairs are two guest rooms with antique beds, private full baths, and a separate entryway. Connected to the main house but with its own private entrance, the Pineapple Sweet has a full kitchen, an antique-filled living room, a marble-tiled full bathroom, and a separate bedroom. Located about 100 yards from the main house, the cottage is 1,000-square-feet of cozy country luxury, with a fireplace, a bedroom with queen bed, cushioned window seats (with great sunset views), wall-to-wall carpet, and open-beam cathedral ceilings. Just added in 1997, the 950-square-foot Hidden Cottage (located in a truly hidden, secluded spot surrounded by protea flowers) features three decks, 8-foot French glass doors, a full kitchen, a washer/dryer, and a private bathtub for two on the deck.
Restaurants are a 15-minute drive away in Makawao, and beaches are another 15 minutes beyond that. Once ensconced, however, you might never want to leave this enchanting inn.

When Ellen Unterman (who still owns a trendy antique store, Country Pine & Design, in Santa Monica, California) and Rupa McLaughlin bought this old Tudor mansion, they saw possibilities. They lovingly refurbished it, redoing the walls in an opaque finish and putting in new flooring and tile. Ellen then shipped almost a warehouse-full of antiques and collectibles over to decorate - and the result is one of the best-decorated country inns in Hawaii.
Located on the slopes of Haleakala in the crisp, clean air of Olinda, this charming B&B is located on an 8-1/2-acre protea farm (with English flower gardens, herb gardens, and a vegetable garden), surrounded by 35,000 acres of ranch lands (with miles of great hiking). The 5,000-square-foot country home, refurbished and outfitted with a professional eye to detail, has large windows with incredible panoramic views of all of Maui. Upstairs are two guest rooms with antique beds and private full baths; a separate entryway leads up to the guest living room, with TV and entertainment center. Ellen delivers a breakfast of tropical fruit, bagels, muffins, hot croissants and cereals every morning.
Located about 100 yards from the main house, the cottage is 1,000 square feet of cozy country luxury. Furnished with more of Ellens prized antiques, it has a fireplace, a bedroom with a queen bed, cushioned window seats (with great sunset views), and open-beam cathedral ceilings. The entryway can easily be reconfigured to a bedroom with futon, so the cottage can sleep five people
My favorite accommodation is the newly-added Pineapple Sweet. Ellen found some old pine lumber and got her carpenter to lay down the floor in tongue-and-groove fashion, giving the suite the feel of an English country home. The large room has a full kitchen at one end, an antique-filled living room at the other, a marble-tiled full bath, and a separate bedroom (with a Hawaiian quilt on the bed for cool winter nights). Running the full length of the suite are floor-to-ceiling French doors that open onto a spectacular view of the rolling hills of Olinda and the beaches below.
Most people go to Maui for sand and surf, but towering over it all is another world, sheltered on the lush slopes of Haleakala volcano. The locals call it Upcountry, and its a flashback to the days before Coppertone and time-sharing, when Maui was ranch and farm country. With no air-conditioning, settlers sought out the high country, and found the cooler climate on Haleakala made for perfect pastureland. It still does. A 30-minute drive up from the beach puts you in the middle of horse ranches and rolling green hills out of Kentucky or southern England.
Upcountry is the Hawaii of 50 years ago, and you can see it all from Olinda Country Cottage, a friendly bed and breakfast located as far up the eucalyptus-lined road as you can go at 4,000 feet. It features an eight-acre protea farm in the backyard, plus cattle ranches, a state forest and the north and west coast of the island in the front. Olinda serves as a quiet retreat for anyone on urban or beach-resort overload. Theres no traffic, no lines, no sterile hotel room. Just fresh air and plenty of country comforts.
The area offers a number of hiking options. You can explore the 35,000-acre Haleakala Ranch, which adjoins the property, or a state forest just a couple of minutes down the road. Already halfway up the mountain, youve got access to other forests along the slopes, like the Koolau Rainforest, and to the ultimate test, trails to the top of 10,000-foot Haleakala crater. The best hike might be out to the veranda of the B&B to take in the aerial view of the whole island.
For trips farther afield, the roads to Hana or to the remnants of the dormant volcanos last eruption at La Perouse in 1790 are only minutes away. The nearby cowboy town of Makawao offers the old Hawaii ranching vibe, mixed with art galleries and restaurants.

Up, up, up the road you drive, four miles north of the little village of Makawao, past the Maui Bird Conservation Center, past colorful protea farms, past aromatic eucalyptus forests, past puffs of clouds and grazing cattle, until you reach the Tudor-style mansion and two cottages on the hill. At 4,000 feet, this is about as far up as overnight visitors can get in quiet upcountry Maui.
At Olinda, most of the main house is occupied by Ellen Unterman and her husband, Rupa McLaughlin. They have a private rear entrance, so there is plenty of privacy for both guests and hosts. Ellen owns a well-established antique shop in Santa Monica and she brought some incredible antiques with her to Maui. Each of the country comfortable rooms has a private bath, down comforters on the beds, and is decorated with whimsical antiques (or serious ones, like a massive English armoire) that Ellen has picked up on the mainland. Guests share a large living room separate from Ellen and Rupa, where Ellen leaves breakfast each morning. Served on a giant leaf, the meal includes fruit, bagels, croissants, muffins, and cereal. There is a ready supply of cut flowers from their adjacent eight-acre protea farm, always in profuse bloom.
On the main floor, with a bank of French doors overlooking the front yard and mountains beyond, the Pineapple Sweet has been transformed from a former garage and utility room into a sleeping beauty. The suite features a large kitchen and dining room, separate bedroom, lovely wood floors, rail fencing used as paneling in the kitchen, country antiques and fun collectibles. Ellen has put her creative knack to work, turning a formerly nondescript space into a homey one.
The Hidden Cottage is a perfect honeymoon getaway. Out of sight, except to nearby grazing horses, the newly constructed 900-square-foot cottage was intentionally built to look aged. Its a gem, with peaked ceilings and oversized French doors that let in lots of light. Morning sun washes over one of the three lanais and oriental carpets cover the wooden floors. From the bedroom you look through French doors onto eucalyptus trees, fields, and a covered deck that holds a bathtub. Other modern amenities include a full kitchen, TV, VCR and stereo.
Within view of the main house is the Country Cottage. Its full kitchen opens onto a combination living and dining room, a comfortable space with beamed ceilings, a small fireplace, rustic wooden coffee table, antiques, and a stereo, TV, and VCR. Plenty of firewood is stacked on the back porch, from which there are pasture views and glimpses of the west Maui mountains. The bedroom is cozy with an antique bureau, floral bedding, and a down comforter. At 1,000 square feet, the cottage can accommodate up to five people, if three are willing to sleep on a futon couch and a single futon in the entryway. For your first morning meal, the hosts stock your refrigerator with fruit, muffins, cereal, milk, juice, and coffee. After that youre on your own.
Olinda Country Cottage is surrounded by the 35,000-acre Haleakala Ranch so there are plenty of hiking opportunities. By car it takes 90 minutes to reach Haleakala crater, 25 minutes in the other direction to reach a good swimming beach, and 75-90 minutes to get to Hana. More and more people are discovering Makawao with its growing number of boutiques, galleries and restaurants. With old-fashioned wooden storefronts, the principal thoroughfare has a kind of Old West look, but look closer and youll see Chinese herb and New Age crystal shops and posted flyers for yoga therapy.

"Romantic Retreats"
"We searched far and wide for romantic inns and bed-and-breakfasts with
great country style. These places are for just the two of you."
Perched on the side of a 10,000 foot-high dormant volcano on the Hawaiian isle of Maui, this getaway provides a refreshing break from the crashing surf, flowered shirts and grass skirts of the island's coastline. Surrounded by a 35,000-acre ranch and ringed by giant, fragrant eucalyptus trees, the bed-and-breakfast is heavenly for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Olinda's setting on side on massive Mount Haleakala affords vistas of the West Maui Mountains, the nearby island of Molokai, and the traditional tourist destinations of Kahului Bay, Lahaina, and Wailea.
The 5,000-square-foot country house and two romantic cottages are decorated with antiques and collectibles. The top floor of the Tudor mansion has a private entrance,as well as two spacious bedrooms, each with a private bath. The inn's Pineapple Sweet is a studio with kitchen, living room and bedroom all in one, a private bathroom, and handcrafted wooden floors. Most romantic is the secluded Hidden Cottage, bordered by a forest and a field of flowers. With commanding views of the mountains and ocean, this cottage boasts a wood-burning stove and a large outdoor bathtub for two-ideal for late-night stargazing.
Forget the beaches, swaying palms, and sprawling resorts 4,000 feet below: this is Maui's eucalyptus- scented Upcountry, where cows and horses-not tourists-roam the sloping meadows. High on the western flank of Maui's massive Haleakala volcano (drive up to the crater to catch the sunrise at 10.000 feet). The Olinda Country Cottages & Inn lies secluded a few miles past the old Hawaiian cowboy town of Makawao, reincarnated as a New Age arts enclave. Lush ginger grows near the trellised rosebushes that climb the Tudor- style main house, while the upper reaches of the eight -acre estate are thick with feathery protea blossoms. Co-owner Ellen Unterman has filled the two bed-and-breakfast rooms and two cottages with an eccentric mix of country furniture from her former antiques-store-to-the-stars in Santa Monica. Most frequently requested is the "Hidden Cottage", a cozy lovers den tucked away in a private corner of the property, where French doors welcome the mountain light, a wood burning stove warms brisk nights, and an outdoor tub for two beckons seductively from the bedroom lanai. -- Derik Ferrar

"For Island magic, head mauka—toward the mountain—so far up that the only things above you are the clouds, birds, treetops, and a volcano. You're nearly halfway to the top of 10,023-foot Haleakala Crater, 60 minutes away by car. Stay in Olinda's spacious Hidden Cottage, with its French windows, high ceilings, and a bathtub for two on the deck. There are three verandas and no neighbors—just fields and fields of protea flowers and forest trails scented with eucalyptus." —Jocelyn Fujii
